When we first told Eli about a Pinewood Derby, he was not excited. When he first seen the wood block slide of the box, he was not excited. After the wheels fell out of the box, he still was not excited but a little curious. He said something like, 'You put wheels on this block of wood?' I explained that we can take this block and shape into a car. Still curious but unexcited he says, 'Can it have headlights?' He and Ali had been playing with LEDs and a jumper board from my electrical engineering kit at the time, so he knew just what kind of lights to use. After looking at some race videos on youtube and photosites with pictures, he chose his shape. He was finally excited and so was his sister. So we sat down and sketched out every detail then went to work. They both had a blast cutting and chiselling and Eli loved picking out and putting on his decals and color. I helped them use the tools, sand, clear coat, and get the wheels in there sweet spot. We had an awesome time and when we finally got the batteries in and lights glowing, we were all excited. Eli went on to take awards in Pack 269(school), Pack 138(church) in Illinois and again here in his Utah Pack. Ali got to race 'Blackmoon' as she named it in our ward derby and in the free for all after the derby here. Since they have had there last official races, I thought they deserved a little photo shoot of their own.
